IBM Cloud Network Latency Testing

IBM Cloud has a looking glass site that allows for basic network latency testing between IBM Cloud Data Center locations and a specific target IP address. Instructions on how to use the site to perform a basic ping test are below.

1. From a browser, connect to the following URL:
   http://lg.softlayer.com
   
   

2. Main screen will appear. Click I Agree

   Note: SoftLayer is now IBM Cloud (SoftLayer was acquired by IBM in 2013)
   
   

3. Test screen will appear.
   
   - For Command select Ping
   
   - For Select Location and Router choose one of the IBM Cloud Data Centers from the drop down list that corresponds with one of the locations shown below (these are the locations that Maximo and TRIRIGA SaaS can be provisioned from):

   - Ashburn, VA (Washington, DC)
   - San Jose, CA
   - Montreal, CAN
   - Toronto, CAN
   - Amsterdam
   - Paris
   - London
   - Singapore
   - Sydney

   Note: most locations will show two routers (a pair). Either router can be chosen, it does not make a difference.

   
   - For Target Address/Subnet or Hostname provide a public facing IP address. This is typically a company managed external firewall, gateway or router. Note: the IP address provided must be pingable or the test will not work. It also cannot be “localhost” or 127.0.0.x

   
   - Check I’m not a Robot click Execute

4. If the IP address provided is pingable, the test results, along with network latency (in milliseconds) will be returned. Time (in ms) represents the network latency between the two selected locations.

   If the test fails, try to ping the IP address from a DOS or Linux command prompt first (to verify it) before using it in the looking glass tool.
