Connecting to your IBM Cloud Environment with OpenVPN

Note:
The instructions in this guide describe installing the OpenVPN client for Windows. The use of OpenVPN clients for other platforms is permitted (Mac, Linux), but not directly supported by the IBM SRE team.
Be sure you have received and OVPN file (*.opvn) via email before proceeding.

  1. Using your internet browser, navigate to https://openvpn.net/community-downloads
    Click the link to download the latest Windows Installer:

     

  2. Download and save the file to your preferred location:

     

     

  3. Right click on the file and select Install to launch the installer:

     

  4. If you are prompted with a UAC warning about making changes to your computer, click Yes

     

  5. For Setup Type, click Install Now

     

  6. Product will install. When the installation is complete, click Close

     

  7. You should now see an OpenVPN icon on your task bar with the following message. Click OK

     

  8. Navigate to the system tray (in far lower right hand corner).
    Right-click on the OpenVPN icon (screen with padlock) and select Import File

     

  9. Navigate to the location of the OVPN file (*.opvn) you were provided (it should have been sent to you via email). The name of the file is usually companyname_firstintiallastname.opvn
    Select the file and click Open

     

  10. You should see a “File imported successfully” dialog box. Click OK

     

  11. Right-click the system tray icon again and choose Connect to establish the VPN connection

     

  12. You should see a successful connection screen similar to below. Click Hide

     

  13. In the system tray, your OpenVPN icon should now have a red screen. If you hover over it, it will show you are connected:

     

  14. You can now proceed to Logging into the Development Server

  15. You can disconnect the VPN by right-clicking on the icon and choosing Disconnect
